Microsoft’s WorldWide Telescope (WWT for short) allows you to access imagery from the best telescopes in the world, imagery that professional astronomers use in their research. By using said imagery, Microsoft’s WorldWide Telescope turns your PC into a virtual telescope – a virtual telescope that allows you to explore the universe.

WorldWide Telescope is available as a Gold and as a Legacy version. The Gold version is meant to be used on PCs powered by Windows 7 or Windows 8. Do not try to install it on an older version of Windows, because they are not supported. And do not try to install it on Windows XP because it can potentially prevent the Legacy version from running. Speaking of which, the WorldWide Telescope Legacy version is meant to be used on PCs powered by Windows XP or Windows Vista.

A setup wizard will help you install WorldWide Telescope Gold on your Windows 7 or Windows 8-powered PC. Said wizard tells you that whenever you launch WorldWide Telescope, it will automatically check for updates. Said wizard will offer to show you the WorldWide Telescope add-in for Excel when the installation process completes. And when the installation process completes, you will see two shortcuts on your desktop: WorldWide Telescope and WWT Mars.

You won’t immediately get the hang of using WorldWide Telescope. It is a complex tool that has a lot to offer. Cons:
Since WorldWide Telescope is a complex tool, you may find it a bit challenging at first.

Pros

WorldWide Telescope is available as a Gold Edition for Windows 7 and 8 and it is available as a Legacy edition for Windows XP and Vista. A handy Getting Started guide is available online; guided tours are available within the application. WorldWide Telescope uses imagery from the best telescopes in the world, imagery that professional astronomers use in their research. WorldWide Telescope turns your PC into a virtual telescope that you can use to explore the universe. There’s a WorldWide Telescope add-in for Excel. WorldWide Telescope is free software.

Cons

equently, you will have to go through a learning curve to get accustomed to its interface and to understand all that can be done with the application. If you need help using WorldWide Telescope Gold, visit the Getting Started page on WorldWideTelescope.org or open the WorldWide Telescope application and click on the Guided Tours button from the upper left hand corner. As I mentioned above, WorldWide Telescope is a complex tool that has a lot to offer. To better put things in perspective, here’s a quick look at the main features this virtual telescope has to offer: imagery from the best telescopes in the world; freely explore the sky, explore the planets in the solar system, explore the universe; simple interface navigation; access readymade guided tours or create your own tours; use the Sandbox Mode to view 3D data and models. WorldWide Telescope is free software. Marvel at the beauty of the sky, explore the planets in the solar system, discover the universe with Microsoft Research’s WorldWide Telescope.
